There are 24 seconds left on the clock and the ball ends up in your hands. Your team, the fans, the GM up in his skybox—they’re all counting on you.

You take the shot … and miss.

This is the kind of pressure top athletes face every single game. The expectations are immense and the stakes are high. There’s no time to get caught up in your head, questioning why or beating yourself up for a mistake. You have to stay in the game—you have to focus and refocus constantly.

That’s where mindfulness comes in. “It’s all about being present, and if you lose it, how fast you can refocus on the next play,” says mental training coach Graham Betchart. His work with NBA players, such as the Miami Heat’s (and slam-dunk superstar) Aaron Gordon, is all about teaching athletes at the very top of their field how to train their minds just as they would train their bodies.

But these skills are not just for sports stars, says Betchart. Anyone who needs to focus under pressure thrives through this work, he says. With that in mind he teamed up with an app called Lucid, to share his mental-training program, including 5-minute guided practices he calls “MVP” which stands for meditation, visualization, and positive self-talk.

Here’s how he guides his players through mindfulness so they can keep their heads in the game and perform at their peak:

1) Fail Your Way to the Top
You won’t succeed until you first make a whole lot of mistakes, Betchart says. Know this, and you’re on the road to developing resilience. But how do you muster the energy to pick yourself up and keep trying when you’ve let everyone, including yourself, down? It’s about self-compassion, Betchart says. And no, he admits, this is not a natural trait for a competitive 19-year-old male trying to make his name in professional sports. But it’s essential to cultivate if you ever hope to let go of those things that you simply can’t control. And letting go is how you experience the freedom from doubt that lets you bounce back, start fresh, and actually enjoy the game.

2) Know “What’s Important Now” (WIN)
Mindfulness helps athletes attend to the task at hand. “If worrying about results and outcomes is where you are, you’ve lost your focus,” Betchart says. The same goes for thinking about what happened five minutes ago. Your actions in the moment are all that you can control. So, if you get distracted, come back to the breath, to your feet, and to what you can see directly in front of you. “Fight to be here,” Betchart says. “You might have to come back 1,000 times, and that’s OK.”

Here’s a sample of one of Betchart’s MVP 5-minute guided meditations on staying present in the moment:

5-Minute Meditation for Being Present Like an Athlete

5:00

3) Build Supreme Confidence
Betchart says that most people think confidence starts with a feeling. He believes true confidence stems from action. Instead of basing your confidence on past results or a particular outcome, “you focus on the process,” he says. Stay in the moment and act from there, trusting that all the work and preparation you’ve done will support you. Still scared? Good. There’s real juice in vulnerability, Betchart says. Acknowledge the fear and move toward it anyway, leaning into and trusting in your process. Do this long enough and you’ll build what he calls supreme, or authentic, confidence.

4) Cultivate Competitive Collaboration
Pro athletes are hugely competitive—that’s a big part of how they got where they are. But learning to harness that competitive drive in constructive ways is vital, Betchart says. “It’s like fire: It can cook your food and keep you warm, or it can burn your house down.”

That’s where mindful awareness come in. We start to understand that we all win when we push each other to be our best. “If you’re at your best, I don’t feel scared, I feel joy,” Betchart says. “My best comes out when I’m playing against the best.”

“It takes a lot of compassion to think, I need you,” he adds. “But it’s really a collaboration. We need each other.”

[17613,17600,17599,17617
1045,560,17274,618
[1050
post-14911","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-focus-attention","category-learn","category-mindfulness-for","category-research-science","tag-focus","tag-mindful-movement","tag-premium","tag-video

Train Your Brain to Thrive - Mindful

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@graph":[{"@type":"Article","@id":"https://www.mindful.org/train-brain-thrive/#article","isPartOf":{"@id":"https://www.mindful.org/train-brain-thrive/"},"author":{"name":"Kelle Walsh","@id":"https://www.mindful.org/#/schema/person/d0ded964572e958166f364df871a3277"},"headline":"Train Your Brain to Thrive","datePublished":"2016-10-04T14:48:00+00:00","dateModified":"2026-04-01T03:29:06+00:00","mainEntityOfPage":{"@id":"https://www.mindful.org/train-brain-thrive/"},"wordCount":735,"publisher":{"@id":"https://www.mindful.org/#organization"},"image":{"@id":"https://www.mindful.org/train-brain-thrive/#primaryimage"},"thumbnailUrl":"https://www.mindful.org/content/uploads/2016/10/Thrive.jpg","keywords":["Focus","Mindful Movement","premium","video"],"articleSection":["Focus &
